Basement Flood Due to Sump Pump Failure

We receive many calls every year to respond to water damage resulting from a basement flood. Often, the cause is a sump pump failure – either a defective pump, and old pump, or a power outage that prevented the pump from working.

Is sump pump failure covered on insurance?

With proper homeowner insurance coverage, this type of water damage will be covered by your insurance. However, coverage is typically only extended IF you have an endorsement on your policy that covers sump pump failure.  Particularly if you have a finished basement, contact your insurance agent to make sure you have this relatively inexpensive rider. For a few hundred dollars each year you can be protected against perhaps $10,000 of water damage drying and re-construction costs.
